Patrick Swayze's publicist has confirmed the actor is suffering from pancreatic cancer after US media reported he may have just weeks to live.

The report was confirmed in a statement released this morning.

"Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treatment," the statement said.

The statement quotes Swayze's doctor George Fisher as saying the prognosis is not bad as what has been reported in the media.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far," Dr Fisher said.

"All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."

Earlier, tabloid newspaper The National Enquirer said Swayze, 55, had just five weeks to live.

The newspaper reported Swayze was told in January he had a malignant form of the cancer and that it had spread to other parts of his body.

Swayze has reportedly been undergoing treatment at Stanford University’s prestigious Palo Alto cancer centre for the past month.

The actor and his wife Lisa Niemi — who both hold pilot's licences — have been flying to and from Palo Alto in their private jet, the report said.

Swayze's tumour is said to have shrunk after three doses of radical chemotherapy, but the treatment was not as successful as doctors had hoped.

"He was told he could have two more treatments, but his cancer was not responding," a source was quoted in the Enquirer as saying.

"In short — they held out little hope for a cure."

Pancreatic cancer has the poorest survival rates compared to any other cancer, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. After diagnosis just 19.5 percent of males and 18 percent of females in Australia live beyond one year.

The deadly cancer was responsible for 1882 deaths in Australia in 2003, the institute reports.

Swayze shot to fame in the 1987 teen hit Dirty Dancing, and built on his star power three years later with a tear-jerking turn opposite Demi Moore in Ghost.

He has also been seen in more offbeat and supporting roles such as Donnie Darko in 2001.
